Trichur pooram festival. This is the annual festival of the temple and is celebrated to mark the divine meeting of the gods. It is believed that on this day in the Malayalam month of “Medam”, all the deities from the surrounding temples come to the Vadakkunathan temple for a grand meeting. It is the most colorful and popular of all the temple festivals here in Kerala.
The venue for the grand celebrations is the famous Vadakkunathan temple in Trichur. It is one of the oldest temples in Kerala with a typical Kerala temple architecture. The temple has many murals and interesting work of art. The festival celebration was started by the architect of Trichur, Raja Rama Varma also called Sakthan Thampuran who was the Raja of Kochi. The Pooram festival is celebrated for two days. The festival begins at dawn on the first day and continues till 12 noon the next day. During this festival, all the ten deities from the surrounding temples pay their obeisance to the presiding deity of Thrissur, i.e Lord Shiva. All the festivities are held at the Thekkinkadi maidan around the huge premises ofVadakkunathan temple. The entire festivities with the elephants and fireworks are a spectacular sight.
